How to make a Black Bean Puree

  • Black beans, 1 can (rinsed & drained)
  • Extra virgin olive oil, 2 Tbsp 
  • Onion diced, 1 small 
  • Jalapeno, 1 (diced)
  • Garlic cloves, 2 (minced)
  • Chicken or vegetable broth, 1 cup
  • Cilantro chopped, 1/4 cup 
  • Cumin, 1 tsp. 
  • Chili powder,1 tsp. 
  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Over medium heat, warm olive oil in a medium saucepan. Saute onion and jalapeno for about 5 minutes until tender. Add the garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

Step 2

Add 1/2 cup broth and black beans. Bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. Simmer until most of the broth is absorbed. If necessary, add another 1/2 cup broth. Add the cilantro and seasonings and heat through.

Step 3

Puree until desired consistency is achieved with an immersion blender or blender.

Step 4

Serve warm with tortilla chips and queso fresco cheese.
