  • 3 green bell peppers, halved and seeded
  • cheesecloth
  • 5 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons celery seed
  • 3 tablespoons mustard seed
  • 1 tablespoon salt

Step By Step Instructions To Make Amish Green Tomato Relish

Step 1

Grinder or food processor tomatoes, onions, red bell peppers, and green bell peppers in batches. Place a large colander or large bowl in the sink and line it with cheesecloth. For one hour, pour the tomato mixture into the strainer.

Step 2

In a large, non-aluminum stockpot over high heat, combine drained tomato mixture, sugar, vinegar, celery seed, mustard seed, and salt. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

Step 3

Clean and sterilize 12 jars 1 pint and 6 jars 1 quart to hold relish. Sterilize the jars and pack relish into them without leaving any spaces or air pockets. Make sure the jars are full; screw the lids on.

Step 4

Fill a large stockpot halfway with boiling water and place a rack on it. With the help of a holder, carefully lower the jars into the pot. Make sure there is a 2-inch space between each jar. Fill the jars with boiling water until the tops are covered by two inches of water. Boil water for 30 minutes, then covers and let cool.

Step 5

Once the jars have been removed from the pot, place them on a cloth-covered surface or wood surface, several inches apart, until they have cooled. After each lid has cooled, press the top with your finger to ensure that the seal is tight (the lid does not move up or down). It is possible to store relish for up to a year.
