Chicken and Dumplings are one of my all-time favorite meals. I grew up eating Dumplings from a small town in western Pennsylvania called Marple Newtown. My mom made these dumplings at our kitchen table, and they were one of the first things I ever ate. I’ve eaten a lot of chicken and dumplings over the years, and this is my Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings version.

How to make Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings

This recipe is one of the easiest and most delicious dishes that you can make. The ingredients are simple, but the taste is out of this world. This dish is perfect for a cold winter day, or when you want to use up some leftover chicken. These dumplings don’t require a lot of work. The end result is a delicious meal that will make everyone happy. And if you’re not a fan of the dumpling – then we’re sure you’ll love this recipe too. Ingredients

  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 1 lb.)
  • 2 cups plus 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk

Step by Step Instructions to make Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings

Step 1

Mix broth, water, onion powder, 12 teaspoons of salt, and a pinch of pepper in a large pot. Over medium-high heat, bring to a boil. Put the chicken in the pot, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cover it. Cook chicken for 12 to 15 minutes, until it is just cooked through. Place chicken breasts on a plate using tongs or a slotted spoon. Let it cool.

Step 2

Make dumplings while the chicken cooks. Mix 2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Then add shortening and work it into the flour with your fingers until it is in tiny pieces. Stir buttermilk into the flour-shortening mixture until a crumbly dough forms. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough about 15 times until it forms a ball.

Step 3

Roll out dough to 1/4″ thickness, then cut into roughly 2″ squares (don’t worry about sides that aren’t perfectly square, use them too!). Lightly dust the surface of the cut dumplings with the remaining 1 tablespoon of flour.

Step 4

Once the chicken has been removed from the pot, turn the heat up to high and bring the broth to a boil. Add dumplings one by one and let boil for five minutes. Separate any dumplings that are stuck together with a spoon as you stir. Reduce the heat so the liquid simmers and partially covers the pot, leaving a small crack on one side. Stir occasionally until dumplings are tender and broth is thickened to gravy consistency, about 20 minutes.

Step 5

Meanwhile, shred cooked chicken with two forks into bite-sized pieces. Stir chicken into the pot when dumplings are done cooking, and cook for another minute until chicken is heated through. Add more salt, if desired, and sprinkle with black pepper.

Step 6

Then serve and Enjoy!
