Ingredients

For the chocolate syrup

  • 1 cup coffee (any temperature)
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the black & white milkshakes

  • 1/4 cup whole milk (plus more as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup (plus more for drizzling)
  • 1 pint vanilla ice cream
  • 2 tablespoons malted milk powder
  • 1 pinch kosher salt

Instructions

For the chocolate syrup

  • In a small saucepan, combine the coffee and sugar. To dissolve the sugar, bring to a simmer, and then whisk in the cocoa powder and salt. Stir until the mixture is smooth and thick enough to coat a spoon completely (this should only take a few minutes). Pour in the vanilla extract. For milkshakes, let it chill completely before using.

For the black & white milkshakes

  • Make sure you freeze the glasses you'll be using before you start. (Or don't, but it will make the shake extra frosty.)
  • In a blender, combine the milk, chocolate syrup, ice cream, malted milk powder, and salt. Until smooth, blend just a little.
  • In the bottom of the glasses, drizzle some chocolate syrup. Add some milkshakes to the mix. Add some chocolate syrup. You can add some milkshakes. Until the milkshake is finished, repeat this process.
  • Make sure you drink through a straw!
