Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour, 1 cup
  • Yellow cornmeal, ⅔ cup
  • Sugar, 2 tablespoons
  • Baking powder, 1½ teaspoons
  • Dry mustard, ½ teaspoon
  • Salt, ¼ teaspoon
  • Shortening, 2 tablespoons
  • Egg, 1 large(beaten)
  • Milk, 1 cup
  • Wooden craft sticks, 10
  • Hot dogs, 1 pound
  • Canola oil, for frying
  • ketchup, optional
  • Mustard, optional

Instructions

Step 1

Combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, dry mustard, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir well to combine.

Step 2

Cut the shortening into the mixture with a fork until it becomes a fine crumble.

Step 3

Mix egg and milk together in a small bowl. Add this mixture to the flour mixture. Mix until smooth (batter will be thick).

Step 4

In a deep, heavy skillet, pour enough oil to completely cover the hot dogs. Preheat the oil to 365°F.

Step 5

Each hot dog should be topped with a wooden stick. The hot dog should be dipped into the batter and coated. Place one or two hot dogs at a time into the hot oil. Cook them for 7-10 minutes, turning occasionally. Finished hot dogs have a dark golden brown color to the batter.

Step 6

To catch any excess oil, remove the pronto pup from the oil and place it on a paper towel.

Step 7

Top with ketchup and/or mustard and serve immediately.
