A few years ago I spent quite a lot of money on a steak n shake chili recipe. I wanted to recreate the real steak n shake chili that I used to order from my favorite burger joint, but I didn’t have the ingredients to make it. Unfortunately, I went to the grocery store and was really really disappointed. It turns out that I wasn’t even close to getting what I thought I was going to get when I made my own.

It’s true that steak n shake is a popular brand of chili, but what is commonly known as steak n shake chili isn’t quite what you might expect. This recipe is based on a recipe from the archives of the original steak n shake chili recipe. The original steak n shake chili recipe was a slow cooker recipe that cooked the beef, onion, and green peppers in the sauce the night before.
How to make a Steak N Shake Chili Recipe
Meat, potatoes, and spices combine to make this chili recipe. It’s cooked in a slow cooker, which is perfect for those who don’t want to cook all day. This chili uses many great ingredients like tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, and other vegetables. You can serve it with a bowl of rice and a crunchy tortilla or with tortilla chips.
Ingredients
- Oil, 2 tbsp
- Salt, 1/2 tsp
- Ground beef,1/2 lb
- French Onion Soup, 1 can
- Dark kidney beans, 1 can
- Chili powder, 1 tsp
- Cumin, 1 tbsp
- Garlic powder, 1 tsp
- Paprika, 1 tsp
- Worcestershire sauce, 2 tsp
- Liquid Smoke, 1/4 tsp
- Tomato sauce, 1/2 cup
- Cola (Coke, Pepsi, etc), 1/2 cup
Instructions
Step 1
Cook ground beef in oil in a Dutch oven-style pan (with high sides).
Step 2
In a mini blender, combine soup with 1/2 can of kidney beans (some liquid from the beans is fine – do not drain). For 1 minute, pulse the blender until the mixture is completely pureed.
Step 3
Ground beef should be drained.
Step 4
All remaining ingredients and soup & bean mixture should be added to the pot with beef.
Step 5
Bring to a simmer, then turn the heat to the LOWEST setting and simmer for one hour.
Step 6
Serve with grated cheese, diced onion, and oyster crackers.
Step 7
Alternatively, you can serve on top of spaghetti for a Steak ‘n Shake 3-way!
