Barefoot Contessa Baked French Toast Casserole

Ingredients
  

  • 1 Challah loaf
  • 8 Large eggs
  • 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract
  • 5 cups Half-and-half or milk
  • 3 tbsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp Grated orange zest
  • 1/4 tsp Kosher salt
  • Confectioners’ sugar and maple syrup for serving

Instructions
 

  • Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Slice the challah loaf into 3-4 inch thick slices. Put the slices in a baking dish that measures 9x13x2 inches.
  • Mix the eggs, honey, half-and-half, orange zest, vanilla, and salt together. Cover the bread slices with the mixture and soak for ten minutes.
  • Pour enough hot water into a large roasting pan. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil tightly in the roasting pan. Score the foil a few times for steam to escape.
  • Remove the aluminum foil and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the bread puffs up. Let the baking dish cool for a few minutes.
  • Sprinkle confectioners’ sugar lightly. Stir in maple syrup while still hot.
