Squaw Bread Recipe

This wholesome and nutritious bread needs you to buy some ingredients but the process of making it is very easy. You have to make 3 separate mixtures of flour, yeast, and brown sugar. Then mix these mixtures and beat them together. Add the remaining flour and mix again. Knead the dough and let it rest so that its volume increases. Make 4 portions and let rest again.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups Whole wheat flour
  • ¼ cup Brown sugar
  • 1-½ tsp Salt
  • ¼ cup Warm water
  • 2 cups Water
  • 2-½ cups Flour
  • ½ cup Powdered milk
  • ¼ cup + 1 tbsp Honey
  • 1-½ cups Rye flour
  • ¼ cup Raisins
  • cup Oil
  • 3 tsp Yeast
  • ¼ cup Cornmeal
  • Melted butter

Instructions
 

  • Take a blender and add raisins, oil, brown sugar, water, and honey to it. Blend all of these together. 
  • Then add 1 tbsp of honey and ¼ cup of water in 3 tbsp of yeast and mix them.
  • In a bowl, add 1 cup of flour, rye flour, and 2 cups of whole wheat flour. Then add salt and milk. Combine all the flour in the milk well.
  • In the flour mixture, add the yeast mixture and the mixture that you blended earlier with raisins, oil, brown sugar, water, and honey. Beat them all together to combine everything well together. 
  • Then add the remaining whole wheat flour and flour slowly. Do it until the flour is pulled away from the sides of the bowl.
  • Flour a clean working surface and take out the flour mixture on it. Then knead it until it becomes elastic and smooth. If needed, add more flour. Then grease a large bowl with oil and transfer the kneaded flour in it. 
  • Let the flour rest for 1-½ hours so that yeast can do the magic and can double the volume of the flour. When done, punch the resulting dough down. Make four pieces out of it. Cover them and again leave unbothered for 10 minutes.
  • Take 2 baking sheets and sprinkle them with cornmeal. 
  • Turn the 4 pieces of dough into loaves and again cover them leaving for an hour this time.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the bread in the oven for 35 minutes. Look for the moment when the crust browns. Take out and brush with melted butter.  Cut into slices. Squaw bread is ready. Bon Appetit!
