Making this fascinating bean soup is simple but a time-consuming task. If you are free and want to enjoy the heat of the stove in the freezing afternoon, make this soup. You only need to prepare ingredients and pour everything into the pot to simmer it until it gets cooked.
Take a large pot and add three quarts of water. Pour ham hacks into the water and boil it. When water starts boiling, lower the flame and continue simmering it till the hocks are torn away by poking with the spoon.
Take out the hocks from the pot and pour the broth into another pot. Once hocks are cooled, separate meat from bones and preserve it.
Clean the pot in which ham hocks were simmered. Add vegetable oil to it and turn the flame to medium-high level to simmer the mixture. Add sausage to the simmering mixture and make it brown.
Lower the flame and add carrot, onion, garlic, and celery. Stir the mixture while cooking till the onion gets soft and translucent.
Add reserved broth along with tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, potatoes, macaroni, pumpkin pie sauce, salt, sugar, and pepper into it. Stir all the ingredients in the broth. Also, add kidney beans with liquid and boil the broth. Allow it to simmer the mixture for at least one hour at low flame.
After 30 minutes, stir ham hocks as well in the reserved meat. Also, add cabbage and stir it for 5 minutes to make it crispy and tender.
Turn Off the flame and let it cool at room temperature for at least 3 hours before serving it. You can also chill it in the fridge for a few hours.
Reheat the chilled soup before serving. Adjust the salt and pepper of the warm soup as per your flavor. Serve it with Piri Piri sauce and Portuguese sweet rolls.
